Obama Expected in Senegal, Tanzania and South Africa Next Month

President Barrack Obama will visit Dakar next month, ording to reports in the Senegalese press.

The newspaper L'As said today that the president will be in Dakar June 26 to 28 and will be accompanied by First Lady Michelle Robinson Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha.

Newspapers in South Africa have also been reporting an upcoming visit by the American president.

Obama's only other sub-Saharan African travel was in 2009, when he made a short trip to Ghana and delivered a major policy address in Accra.

Trip planning also includes a stop in Tanzania, with Rwanda mentioned as a less likely choice.

Early plans that included Ethiopia have now been scrapped, and the U.S.-Sub-Saharan Africa Trade and Economic Cooperation Forum where the President was tentatively slated to speak has been postponed. The Forum was created by the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa).

Nigeria is now considered unlikely to be included on the President's itinerary, despite early planning for a two-day visit and heavy lobbying by President Goodluck Jonathan's government and reports in the Nigerian press, including 'Obama Considers Stopover in Nigeria' in ThisDay.
