Since Torres had departed for Stamford Bridge, Kenny Dalglish realised the Reds needed a replacement. And fast. How the club decided Newcastle target man Carroll would be a decent like-for-like replacement for the Spaniard is anyone’s guess, but they spent the whole day in negotiations with the Toon Army for their burly forward. Newcastle somehow managed to drive the fee up to £35 million, which Liverpool stupidly decided to pay, ending the most expensive day in deadline history. 

 

9.Carlos Tevez/Javier Mascherano to West Ham, 2006

 The Hammers stunned the footballing world by bringing two Argentinean superstars to Upton Park on deadline day back in the summer of 2006. Tevez and Mascherano had been attracting the interest of many of Europe’s top clubs that summer, so people were understandably confused when the Hammers popped up, announcing the players’ arrival from Corinthians. Mascherano was a disaster and swiftly left for Liverpool, but Tevez proved to be a real hero, keeping the Hammers in the top flight with his goals, before it turned out the deal was dodgy after all.

 

10. Jermain Defoe to Portsmouth, 2008

 Remember the days when Pompey splashed the cash all over the shop, bringing in players of the highest calibre? Well, one of their best signings was Tottenham striker Defoe, who arrived in 2007 for a cut-price fee of £6 million, forming a lethal partnership with Peter Crouch. Defoe scored 14 goals in 30 games for Portsmouth before he rejoined Spurs just a year later.
