Kolkata earn dramatic final win
Posted in Cricket
A
superb innings of 89 from Manvinder Bisla was key for Kolkata as they
won IPL5 in the final over against two-time champions Chennai.
Chennai were in pole position, as Kolkata needed 16 from the last seven deliveries, but Ben Hilfenhaus bowled a no-ball, costing three runs, followed up by a four from the extra ball, turning the game on its head.
Manoj Tiwary hit the winning runs with two balls to spare, striking consecutive boundaries to see the Knight Riders defeat Chennai in their own stadium.
Last year's winners Chennai set a difficult target of 191, thanks to 73 from Suresh Raina, and 54 from opener Mike Hussey. His partner at the top of the order Murali Vijay, also made a significant contribution of 42 as the Super Kings looked set for a third IPL championship.
None of the Kolkata bowlers came out of the game with much credit, as even the mercurial Sunil Narine recorded his worst figures of the tournament, going for 37 from his four wicketless overs.
Despite the huge target, Kolkata kept up with the rate for almost the entire innings. This was more suprising considering that their talismanic skipper Gautam Gambhir was dismissed in the first over.
Gambhir's departure brought Jacques Kallis to the crease, who put on 133 with Bisla for the second wicket. The South African was the steady player in the partnership, whilst his Indian companion played the more brutal role.
Once Bisla and Kallis fell, it looked like the win was out of Kolkata's reach, but the game changed on Hilfenhaus' no-ball, which brought Shakib Al-Hasan and Tiwary back into the game.
The pair obligingly hit the winning runs in the final over to give the Knight Riders a five-wicket run, and make them champions.
Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to bat.
